According to Ukhrul SP, the Indian Army and state police are working together to conduct combined operations to apprehend individuals responsible. Security measures have also been stepped up.
Manipur’s Ukhrul district
In the early hours of Friday in
Manipur's Ukhrul district, armed criminals shot and killed three members of the Kuki community, according to authorities.
The event, according to police, happened at approximately 4:30 in the morning in Thouwai Kuki, a Kuki tribal village that is about 47 kilometres from Ukhrul town, the district's administrative centre and home to the Tangkhuls, a Naga tribe.
Three people from the village have been killed in the incident.
"According to our understanding, a group of armed criminals entered the village from the hills to the east and began shooting at the village guards.
Three villagers were killed in the tragedy. The superintendent of police (SP), Ukhrul, N Vashum, said that there have been no reports of injuries.
Five people, three Meiteis and two Kukis, were killed on August 5 in separate shooting events between the two communities in the districts of Bishnupur and Churachandpur.
After Kuki organisations called for protests against a planned change to the state's quota matrix that would have given the Meitei people
scheduled tribal (ST) status, fighting in Manipur initially started on May 3 in Churachandpur town.
Displacing tens of thousands of people who
Tens of thousands of people were forced to flee burning houses and neighbourhoods into jungles, often crossing state borders, as violence soon overtook the state whose ethnic fault lines run deep.
Over 160 people have died in the conflicts, and 50,000 more have been homeless.
The state's population is made up of around 53% Meiteis and 16% Kukis.
