Bhopal: A Sukhoi Su-30 and a
Mirage 2000 fighter plane from the
Indian Air Force collided earlier today during a training exercise, according to officials. One pilot was killed in the crash. While one plane went down in Morena,
Madhya Pradesh, the other fell 100 kilometres away in Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
According to defence sources, the Sukhoi had two pilots while the Mirage only had one. The Indian Air Force use both planes in combat. The Sukhoi's two pilots were able to escape the aircraft and were flown by helicopter to the hospital.
Both the fighter jets
Both fighter jets took off from the Gwalior Air Force facility, which is home to squadrons of both the French Mirage 2000 and the Russian Sukhoi.
Videos from the scene, which were captured by locals in Morena, showed burning aeroplane parts scattered across the ground.
IAF court of inquiry
A court of inquiry by the IAF has been established to determine whether or not there was a mid-air collision. During the crash, the Su-30 had two pilots while the Mirage 2000 only had one. Initial reports indicate that two of the pilots are safe, and an IAF helicopter is its route to the third pilot's location, according to sources.
The head of the Indian Air Force has briefed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on the accident of two aircraft, according to news source PTI.
