A new framework being developed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) would effectively flash the caller's name on the recipient's phone screen. Only when a phone number is saved in the contact list does a name now appear on the phone's screen. The Trai will shortly begin consultation on designing a system for the caller's KYC-based name to appear on phone screens, according to news outlet PTI, which cited a "senior official". If the caller's number is not saved, users can still recognise callers with the use of programmes like Truecaller. The majority of the data on the app is crowdsourced, thus there are some limits.
PTI reports
PTI reports that the Department of Telecom has given Trai permission to start consultations on the matter (DoT). The consultation on this is anticipated to start in a few months, according to Trai Chairman PD Vaghela.
"We just got a reference, and we'll go to work on this right away. When someone calls, their name will be shown according to KYC, Vaghela informed the news agency. The method will allow names to show on phone screens in line with KYC completed by telecom firms in compliance with DoT standards, the speaker continued.
spam calls
Despite government and smartphone OEM attempts to curb spam calls, the move could offer openness to the entire calling network. The development's actual schedule is still unknown and could take many years to complete since the move is only a reference at this moment. According to "experts" who spoke to Trai, a KYC-based caller identification system would protect consumers from fraud and the increased number of spam calls.
