According to data issued on January 1 by the Union health ministry, India saw a jump in coronavirus infections, with 636 cases reported in 48 hours. India now has 4,394 Covid-19 cases active.
Up until December 28, the nation recorded 145 instances of COVID-19 subvariant JN.1. JN.1 is categorised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an interesting variety that is different from its parent lineage, BA.2.86.
According to WHO, there is still no data to suggest that JN.1 poses a significant overall risk. The health department reports that 1,972 instances of Omicron XBB.1.16, a dominant variation of COVID-19, were recorded.
Cases Across States
In light of the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, the Leh district administration announced today that mask wear will be required in public areas. Last week, the district had 11 instances of COVID-19.
CEO of the District Disaster Management Authority Santosh Sukhadeve issued an official directive saying, "People must ensure compulsory wearing of facemasks in offices, workplaces and public places, including public transport."
What Global Bodies Have to Say
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said that the JN.1 sub-variant of the coronavirus was previously categorised as a variation of interest (VOI) as a component of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, the parent lineage that is recognised as a VOI. Nonetheless, JN.1 cases have been recorded from several nations in recent weeks, and the virus's incidence has risen sharply worldwide.
Due to an increase in Covid cases and the discovery of the JN.1 sub-variant in the nation, the Centre has requested that the states and Union territories keep a continuous watch.
